These days you can find cannabidiol in everything from coffee, to body lotions, to face creams. And you can find it in almost every high street store in a variety of forms. As CBD has just recently blown up, the public’s general knowledge of this cannabinoid is only just growing, and for anyone whose interest in CBD has just peaked, there can be a lot of words you wouldn’t have heard before, and that is why CBD can appear complex at first glance. We’ve created a list of vocabulary that can help when doing your own research into CBD and its products, to give you a head start.
Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one of over one-hundred cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant. CBD is the primary cannabinoid found in the hemp variety, a strain of the cannabis sativa plant.
Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, is one of over one-hundred cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant. THC is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid and is known for its “high” effect. High concentrations of THC can be found in the cannabis indica variety.
Psychoactive is a term used to describe a drug that affects the central nervous system, where the drug is mind-altering and can change a person’s mood, behaviour, and perception- temporarily.
Hemp (also known as industrial hemp) is a strain of the cannabis sativa plant. Hemp fibres have been used throughout history and can be used to create a variety of products, such as building material, textiles, biodegradable plastics, paint, and food.
Full Spectrum refers to a CBD product that consists of all components of the cannabis plant, including THC.
Broad Spectrum is when a CBD product consists of all terpenes and all cannabinoids of the cannabis plant, except THC.
Isolate refers to CBD products that do not contain any other cannabinoids, flavonoids, or terpenes, other than CBD.
Terpenes are fragrant oils that provide flavour and scent to the cannabis plant. There are over one-hundred different terpenes in the cannabis plant that have been identified. They are able to interact synergistically with cannabinoids of the cannabis plant to add to the effectiveness of CBD oil.
The entourage effect is a process where the different cannabis compounds interact with each other synergistically to maximise the beneficial effects of CBD on the human body.
Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
The endocannabinoid system is a biological system within the human body (even if you do not use cannabis), that regulates a variety of processes, including; pregnancy, appetite, pain-sensation, mood, memory, and in mediating the effects of cannabis.
There is always more to learn when it comes to any subject in life, and it is the same when it comes to CBD.
