Frequently Asked Questions About CBD

Bud & Tender CBD Oil at the Therapy Show NEC

What is the difference between hemp and cannabis?

They are one and the same. The true botanical name for hemp is Cannabis Sativa L.

What's the difference between hemp & marijuana?

Marijuana = drug variety = THC dominant plant with low levels of CBD
Hemp = hemp variety = CBD dominant plant with low levels of THC

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid produced by the plant.
CBD is legal, non-intoxicating and it will indirectly affect your body’s cannabinoid receptors.

What is THC?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a phytocannabinoid produced by the plant similar in molecular structure to CBD.
THC is illegal without a medical prescription, intoxicating and it will directly affect your body’s cannabinoid receptors.

Are there other phytocannabinoids?

Yes, there are over 113 known phytocannabainoids. The C. sativa L. plant produces a variety of plant cannabinoids and different chemical variations of the plant will produce different ratios of plant cannabinoids. In fact, Bud & Tender®  premium CBD oil in addition to Cannabidiol (CBD), contains Cannabigerol (CBG), Cannabichromene (CBC), Cannabidivarin (CBDV) & Cannabicitran (CBT).

What is the difference between all the UK CBD oils on the market?

Whole-Plant (Crude) CBD Oil

Low Quality: Effective: Illegal
CBD Crude is an unrefined extract and is considered low quality, it contains all parts of the plant including waste material like waxes, lipids and chlorophyll. The more waste material present; the lower the quality which is a result of a poor extraction method. It will contain THC and potentially other controlled cannabinoids like CBN or THCV. Consumers can fail a controlled drugs test.

Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

High Quality: Most Effective: Illegal
A refined plant extract that is considered high quality (no waste material). It contains as many valuable compounds from the plant as possible. It will contain THC along with multiple cannabinoids and all additional plant compound groups such as terpenoids and flavonoids. Sadly, even though Full-Spectrum is the most effective type of oil, it is illegal in the UK due to containing controlled substances such as THC, CBN and THCV. Consumers can fail a controlled drugs test.

Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

High Quality: Very Effective: Legal
A refined extract that is considered high quality (no waste material). It will contain many valuable compounds found in the plant. It is essentially the same as Full-Spectrum however it has been refined further to remove THC, CBN and THCV (controlled drugs). Consumers will pass a controlled drug test.

Narrow-Spectrum CBD Oil

Good Quality: Medium Effectiveness: Legal
An overly refined extract, it usually contains just one or possibly two cannabinoids. It will contain some of the other beneficial compounds from the plant, however a lot of the additional beneficial compounds have been lost through over refinement; reducing effectiveness. Consumers will pass a controlled drug test.

No-Spectrum CBD Oil

Isolate: Limited Effectiveness: Legal
Isolates are a purified 99% form of isolated cannabinoids; they are one dimensional and would be considered not to have a spectrum within the plant extract classification. They are a single molecule and do not benefit from the entourage effect. They do still work in the body however effectiveness is biphasic; once hitting optimal dosage, effects begin to reverse or diminish even when dosages are increased. Consumers will pass a controlled drug test.

Which spectrum is Bud & Tender CBD Oil?

Bud & Tender Premium CBD Oil is classified as Broad-Spectrum.

Why is whole plant (crude) considered low quality?

When it comes to extraction, we are only looking to extract the essential compounds found in the trichomes of the flower. We do not want to extract any other parts of the plant. If we extract other parts of the plant it is considered a bad extraction and the extract will be tainted with impurities which reduces the quality.

For example, this process also holds true in hash making. When making hash, it is only the trichomes that the hash maker is looking to extract and as such, ‘high-grade’ hash contains no excess plant material; it should be made purely from the trichomes (there are even different grades of trichome). Very low-grade hash will contain a lot of excess waste plant material.

Waste material such as lipids, waxes and chlorophyll are considered bad in extracts and CBD oils. However, they are deemed as good when it comes to hemp seed oil for eating…so be careful not to confuse the two.

What is the difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil?

CBD oil comes from the flowers of the plant. Where as hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the plant.

Which cannabinoids are illegal in the UK?

Any cannabinoid that is a cannabinol derivative is currently illegal in the UK. Unless prescribed by a doctor for medical use.

  • Trans-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-C5
  • Cis-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-C5
  • Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-C4
  • Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-C3 (THCV)
  • Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-C1
  • Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol
  • Cannabinol-C1
  • Cannabinol-C2
  • Cannabinol-C3
  • Cannabinol-C4
  • Cannabinol-C5
  • Cannabinol methyl ether-C5

These cannabinoids can be grouped into Δ9-THC, Δ9-THCV, Δ8-THC, CBN & CBNM-C5.

Simplified as THC, CBN & THCV.

Are your products legal in the UK?

In order to be compliant with UK law, all our products are free from THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), CBN (Cannabinol) and THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin).

Bud & Tender do not sell any products that violate the UK misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

What is CBN?

Cannabinol (CBN) is a cannabinoid that’s produced from Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) when it begins to degrade (oxidize). THC will turn into CBN over time, especially when exposed to light and heat. CBN does not produce the head high associated with THC, instead a user will experience more of a sedative effect coupled with a mild psychoactive effect. CBN and THC are both intoxicating. Fun fact: THCA (the precursor to THC) is not classed as an illegal cannabinoid in the UK.

What is THCV?

THCV is a homologue of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) having a propyl (3-carbon) side chain instead of a pentyl (5-carbon) group on the molecule, which makes it produce a different effect from THC.
The UK government has classified this molecule as a cannabinol derivative and as such a controlled drug.

Do our body’s produce their own cannabinoids?

Yes, our body’s produce human cannabinoids already, they're called endocannabinoids.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

In your body you produce human cannabinoids. Human cannabinoids are responsible for sending messages around your body. This human cannabinoid messaging system is called the endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating the biological functions of your body such as pleasure, pain, sleep, appetite, mood, memory, fertility, pregnancy and pre/post-natal development. Its goal is to make sure all these biological functions are in balance.
The endocannabinoid system balances your biology by using human cannabinoids to pass on messages to receptors, which in turn will adjust accordingly in order to harmonise your body.

Will CBD help with my medical conditions?

All our CBD Oil supplements are for supporting your endocannabinoid system. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

What is the 'entourage effect'?

When multiple compounds found in the plant such as cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids work together to enhance effectiveness.

How much Bud & Tender CBD Oil should I take and when?

You should only supplement when you feel that your endocannabinoid system needs topping up, this is something you will learn to feel. If you wake up and feel great, don’t supplement, save it for when you need it.

The Food Standards Agency in the UK recommends not to consume more than seventy milligrams of cannabidiol per day and that it should only be used by persons over the age of eighteen.

Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different; some people require a large serving once per day, others find that smaller servings three time per day (morning, day and night) works better for them. Some people even have a chronically deficient endocannabinoid system and they don’t start to feel the benefits until after two weeks of continuous use. We will say it’s better to start with a small serving and work your way up from there until your find the sweet spot for your body to achieve biological homeostasis (you feeling great again).

You can get a better understanding about why you should consider supplementing with CBD oil by reading our why supplement with CBD oil page.

Where can I see the laboratory reports for your oils?

On our CBD oil reports page you can view all of our official, certificate of analysis (COA) reports.

Are there any potential side effects from taking CBD?

The World Health Organization states that “CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile”.

However in rare cases some people may experience side effects such as diarrhea or fatigue.

CBD can interact with several medications and this is especially important if you take other supplements or medications that come with a “grapefruit warning.” CBD and grapefruit both interfere with your livers cytochrome P450 enzymes, which play an important role in drug metabolism. If you are unsure, you should always speak with your doctor first before combining CBD and your medication.

Can I travel with your products?

We do recommend caution when travelling through an airport with any of our products. Even though CBD is legal in the UK and in the EU; it may however be mistaken for an illegal THC product. Outside of the EU it is not recommend to travel with any of our CBD products.
