CBD: How does it affect Sleep?

It is not uncommon to hear from friends, family or colleagues that they aren’t sleeping very well or that their sleep schedule is irregular, and this is because most people will suffer from sleep disorders at some point throughout their lives. It is estimated that approximately 100 million people are affected by some sort of sleep disturbance or disorder, including problems with falling to sleep or even just waking up throughout the night. And it is very well known that these kinds of sleep problems can be a result of stress, panic or anxiety. However, we also know how important sleep is for the body and mind, as it is the resting phase for us to recover. CBD is able to work with our endocannabinoid systems (ECS), and this biological system can assist with sleep indirectly by relieving stress and anxiety. CBD oil has been shown to assist the human body’s ECS, and this system has been proven to affect our sleeping patterns, as well as other physiological functions.

So what is CBD? Well, cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. CBD does not create a “high” effect, which is actually associated with another well known cannabinoid called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Instead, CBD is believed to have a calming effect on the body. These effects are due to how the cannabinoid interacts with our ECS, which is made up of a structure of receptors, that are spread throughout the human body and brain.

The ECS is able to access the sleep rhythm, and therefore can affect and regulate our sleep phases. As CBD can interact and assist the ECS, CBD products have become a serious consideration for people who are having sleep problems, whether they are struggling to fall to sleep or are just not getting enough restful sleep.

A lot of sleep disorders and disturbances are triggered by anxiety and stress throughout our lives, and when we are feeling stressed or anxious it makes it harder for us to fall asleep or get enough sleep at night. The long term effects of sleep disturbance can cause problems for not only our bodies but also our mental health.
